Dr. S. Sangeetha · Associate Professor, AI & Data Science · Coimbatore, India

Can a machine learn what you likewithout learning who you are?

That question is my doctorate, and the answer is not a simple yes. Eighteen years in a classroom is how I arrived at it — teaching artificial intelligence while it went from a research curiosity to the most argued-about technology on earth, and taking two more degrees on the side. Scroll and the two stories run side by side.

My workAI and privacy, worldwide

2008

World

Two researchers show that "anonymous" Netflix Prize ratings can be matched back to named people. The privacy problem in recommender systems is born in public.

My work

Lecturer, PSG Polytechnic College

June 2008. I begin nine years of teaching diploma students in Coimbatore, India, the start of a career that runs through four institutions and two more degrees.

Where they meet

The year researchers prove that movie ratings can name you, I begin teaching. Fourteen years later my doctorate answers exactly that problem.

2010

World

The ImageNet challenge opens and a million labelled photographs become the benchmark that defines the decade. Kaggle launches and makes data science a sport.

2012

World

AlexNet wins ImageNet by a margin nobody expected. Deep learning stops being a niche and becomes the field.

My work

Back to school, and a first paper on privacy

June 2012. I begin a Master of Engineering in Computer Engineering at PSG College of Technology while teaching full time. Before the year is out I have two papers, and one of them is already about hiding people inside data.

Where they meet

My privacy research does not start with the doctorate. It starts here, as a master's student carrying a full teaching load.

2014

World

Generative adversarial networks are introduced. Google ships RAPPOR in Chrome, the first differential privacy deployed to hundreds of millions of people.

2015

World

ResNet makes networks a hundred layers deep. Google open-sources TensorFlow in November.

My work

Master of Engineering, Computer Engineering

May 2015, PSG College of Technology.

2016

World

AlphaGo beats Lee Sedol. Apple announces differential privacy in iOS, and a mathematician's guarantee becomes a consumer feature.

2017

World

"Attention is all you need" introduces the Transformer. In August, India's Supreme Court rules in Puttaswamy that privacy is a fundamental right.

My work

Assistant Professor, PSG College of Technology

June 2017, after nine years at the polytechnic. The same month I start a PhD in Information and Communication Engineering on privacy-preserving recommender systems, with Prof. G. Sudha Sadasivam.

Where they meet

The year India decides privacy is a right, I begin the work of making it a property of the software.

2021

Where they meet

The same year a national census trusts differential privacy, my papers show a recommender can too, without going blunt.

2022

World

Stable Diffusion in August, ChatGPT in November. A hundred million people meet a large language model within two months.

2023

World

GPT-4 ships in March. In August, India passes the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, its first data protection law.

Where they meet

India writes its first data protection law. I am now teaching the engineers who will have to build to it.

2024

World

The EU AI Act is adopted. The Nobel Prize in Physics goes to Hopfield and Hinton for the foundations of neural networks.

My work

Best Paper Award, IConSCEPT 2024

Automated real-time infection detection in oyster mushroom using a smart farming system, Data Learning Track, NIT Puducherry. The same year brings a Star Contributor Award from the Kumaraguru Centre for Industrial Research and Innovation, and a Government of Tamil Nadu grant of ₹1,10,000 under Naan Mudhalvan for Vision Navigate, a navigation aid for visually impaired people.

2025

World

AI agents move from demos into everyday software, and with them a new set of questions about what a model is allowed to see.

My work

Associate Professor, AI & DS, PSG iTech

June 2025. Back in the PSG family, at PSG Institute of Technology and Applied Research, Neelambur. In May I gave a guest lecture on building retrieval-augmented applications to government college faculty at GCT Coimbatore. In October I convened the inaugural function of the PSG iTech ACM Student Chapter, 120 students in the room, and represented the college at the ACM India Chapter Summit.

2026

My work

Your Data, Your Privacy

31 January 2026. As Faculty Coordinator of the ACM Student Chapter I run a morning on digital footprints and privacy for 800 students, and the same day host the official pre-summit event of the India AI Impact Summit 2026 on AI for Indian knowledge systems. From July I co-lead an ACM COMPUTE 2026 working group on how learners in Indian computing education handle refutation problems.

Where they meet

Eighteen years in, I am teaching privacy to a cohort that has never known a world without AI.

The timeline is the story. Everything behind it is a tool: 30 papers you can search and cite, five guides that explain the research from the beginning, a way to ask questions of it, the record of what I teach and who I have taught, and a way to reach me.
